Pet Airways - Airlines for Pets

A new airline for pets is taking off with weekly flights to five airports across the country. Beginning July 14, Pet Airways is flying pets to and from Baltimore/Washington International; Midway in Chicago; Rocky Mountain Airport in Broomfield, Colo., near Denver; Hawthorne Municipal Airport near Los Angeles; and Republic Airport on Long Island serving the New York City metro area.

The airline allows cats and dogs to travel in carriers in the main cabin of the plane, rather than the cargo hold. While some airlines allow small animals to fly in the cabin as long as their carriers fit under the seats, Pet Airways has no limit on size.

The carrier will not transport human passengers other than crew and attendants to care for the animals during flights. Pet owners will have to fly separately.

One-way fares start at $149. Many of the flights on the airline's limited initial itinerary are already booked full with a waiting list depending on the animal's size.

To prevent pets from getting sick, there won't be any beverage or snack service.

Giant Sausage Mortadella

In Bologna and the surrounding area, the boiled sausage known as Mortadella can be as heavy as 200 kilograms. Even weirder is the fact that it’s cut into the thinnest slices, so its taste and aroma can be fully appreciated.

Swallow Flies Through Two-Inch Gap at 35 MPH

A swallow with a 14-inch wingspan managed to turn sideways mid flight to squeeze through a two-inch-wide gap in a locked barn door. It did this without touching sides.

The swallow is one of a pair rearing chicks inside the barn in Angus Glens, North Dundee.

Wildlife photographer Keith Ringland captured the moment from a nearby shed. He believes the parents have worked out an entry- and exit system to avoid colliding at high speeds: "The swallow used a different, much bigger hole in the roof to leave the building," he told the Daily Mail.

Super Hero Wedding

You may have seen or read about some over-the-top wedding productions, but Tony Lucchese told Sarah LaFore will be going the extra mile when they marry today in Portland, Maine. They will say their vows dressed as Superman and Wonder Woman.

Aquaman, Flash and Spider-Man round out the groomsmen. Ten bridesmaids will be Amazon warriors in comic mythos, Wonder Woman is an Amazon princess with spears, togas and sandals.

Two weeks ago, LaFore and Lucchese made an emergency trip to Jersey, down and back in one day, to tweak her costume.

“Paramount to having a successful wedding is having the bride feel pretty,” he said.

He and volunteer carpenters built a Fortress of Solitude altar in a rented warehouse space in Portland. They’ll be married by Kieschnick’s father, dressed as Jor-El, Superman’s dad. Part of the script borrows from Kryptonian wedding vows. The couple will break character to say, “I do.”

The two met while working on a theatrical production in Oak Ridge, Tennessee seven years ago. They have been planning the wedding for 18 months.

Nuka Cola Vending Machine

The machine is an old Vendo96 with stickers designed by my friend Peggy and printed on our large-format printer. The NukaCola Quantum is a Mike's Hard Lemonade with an auqa-colored LED and battery taped to the bottom of the bottle. That's one of us Shop Guys holding the bottle all Vanna-White-on-smack style.
